l have a 20 week old rooster who is nice and calm at the moment. We have handled him lots since he was young. He is very nice boy.At what age do they start bothering the hens? And will he get agressive as he grows older?

Are Australorp Roosters really agressive

Every rooster is different, although some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others.

That being said, I've never met a ''nice'' Australorp rooster. The ones I've been in contact with r very big & very mean. After the age of 18 months, most end up in the stew pot. I am not a big fan of that breed. This breed in particular has been used for cockfighting because of their size & temperament.

Your bird is currently a cockeral & is therefore immature. Most roosters will come into their own around 10 months to a year, & I prefer to use roosters that r about 2 years old for breeding purposes. Usually, by the time they r sexually mature (about 1 year) is when you're going to see how the personality & temperament really is. Hormones play a big factor in how they behave.

A rooster will usually start crowing & trying to mount hens by about 10 months to a year in age.

However, by hand raising a rooster, it helps (but does not guarantee) that u will have a docile, friendly adult rooster. Continue to handle him daily & u stand a better chance of having him continue to be friendly. Aggression in roosters is usually from that bird becoming territorial (over their yard & their women). If he sees u as an intruder or a threat, then he is more likely to go at you.

Hope this helps!
